Civil Engineers working on design may specialise in road design, infrastructure such as drainage and wastewater, or site services such as the installation of utilities and services for new developments. They also manage and supervise engineering projects for clients with frequent visits to site.

Civil Design Engineers tend to work for private civil or multidiscipline engineering consultancies. They have at a minimum a degree in Civil Engineering, and many hold postgraduate qualifications. Many have achieved or are actively working towards Chartered Engineer status. This job requires a high degree of communication and collaboration with external actors such as clients, architects, local authorities and those working on site.
