The Work

As Senior Quantity Surveyor / Commercial Manager, you will lead the commercial function across multiple large-scale construction projects, ensuring robust cost control, effective contract management, and strong financial performance from pre-construction through to final account.

Working closely with senior leadership, project managers, and site teams, you will provide commercial direction, mentor Quantity Surveyors, and build trusted relationships with clients and subcontractors.

  • Lead the commercial delivery of major building projects from inception to completion
  • Oversee project budgets, cost forecasting, and regular financial reporting
  • Drive procurement strategies and manage subcontractor tendering and appointments
  • Manage valuations, variations, claims, and agreement of interim and final accounts
  • Ensure contractual compliance and actively identify and mitigate commercial risks
  • Support project delivery teams in achieving programme, margin, and profitability targets
  • Develop and maintain strong, professional relationships with clients and key stakeholders
  • Lead, mentor, and support junior and intermediate commercial team members

The Person

The ideal candidate is a commercially astute construction professional with strong leadership skills and a track record of delivering large-scale building projects for a main contractor.

  • Degree-qualified in Quantity Surveying, Construction Economics, or a closely related discipline
  • Significant experience in a Senior Quantity Surveyor or Commercial Manager role within a main contractor environment
  • In-depth knowledge of construction contracts and end-to-end commercial management processes
  • Proven background in managing the commercial aspects of large, complex building projects
  • Excellent negotiation, stakeholder management, and communication skills
  • Strong leadership and team mentoring ability, with a collaborative working style
  • Comfortable operating in a fast-paced environment and managing multiple priorities
  • Highly commercial, proactive, and solutions-focused, with strong attention to detail
  • Membership of a recognised professional body (e.g. SCSI/RICS or equivalent) is an advantage
