The Role
The Health & Safety Officer will be responsible for supporting and driving the development of a strong Health & Safety culture across the organisation and ensure compliance with relevant legislation and company requirements and proactively identify opportunities to improve Health & Safety standards.
Key Responsibilities
Health & Safety Management
- Manage the development, implementation and ongoing review of Health & Safety policies, procedures and programmes.
- Ensure compliance with the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005, associated General Application Regulations and relevant Irish and EU Health & Safety legislation.
- Prepare, implement and regularly review the company's Safety Statement.
- Provide practical Health & Safety advice and guidance to employees, managers and senior management.
- Act as a trusted Health & Safety advisor to internal stakeholders.
- Promote a positive Health & Safety culture throughout the organisation.
- Identify opportunities for continuous improvement in Health & Safety standards and practices.
- Liaise with Safety Representatives and support the effective operation of Safety Committees.
- Support Health & Safety requirements relating to employees, contractors and visitors.
Risk Assessment, Auditing & Inspections
- Conduct regular workplace inspections and Health & Safety audits.
- Carry out and review Risk Assessments and Hazard Identifications across the organisation.
- Monitor compliance with Health & Safety policies, procedures and safe systems of work.
- Identify hazards and recommend appropriate control measures.
- Monitor and support the implementation of corrective and preventative actions.
- Review Risk Assessments following accidents, incidents, near misses, process changes or identified hazards.
- Maintain appropriate records of inspections, audits, risk assessments and corrective actions.
Qualifications & Experience
- A Third Level qualification in Health & Safety or a recognised Health & Safety qualification is required.
- Minimum 2–3 years' experience in an on-site Health & Safety Officer role.
- Experience within a manufacturing or industrial environment would be advantageous.
- Proven experience in Risk Assessment and EU Health & Safety legal compliance.
- Experience in auditing and workplace inspections.
- Experience delivering Health & Safety training.
- Experience in accident and incident investigation.
- Experience working with Health & Safety management systems and documentation.
- Experience dealing with insurance companies, brokers and/or loss adjusters would be highly advantageous.
- Strong working knowledge of the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005 and associated General Application Regulations.
- Experience developing and delivering Health & Safety training.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- A proactive approach to identifying and resolving Health & Safety issues.
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to develop practical solutions.
- Ability to work independently and use initiative.
