About Your New Job

As the Health & Safety Officer, you will take overall responsibility for health and safety compliance across several construction sites in the West of Ireland, acting as the primary contact for all safety-related matters.

Main responsibilities:

  • You will conduct comprehensive site audits, risk assessments, and regular inspections to ensure compliance with company policies and all relevant health, safety, and environmental legislation.
  • You will design and deliver induction programmes, toolbox talks, and specialised training sessions to staff and subcontractors, promoting a strong culture of safety awareness at all levels.
  • You will investigate accidents, incidents, and near-misses, carrying out root cause analysis, preparing reports, recommending improvements, and ensuring the implementation of corrective actions.
  • You will actively identify and address potential hazards, implementing practical solutions to mitigate risks and improve operational safety standards.
  • You will monitor and update all health and safety documentation, including safety statements, method statements, risk assessments, and site safety files, ensuring all records are audit ready.
  • You will support and advise site and project management teams on statutory requirements, best practices, and new legislation updates, ensuring compliance with national standards and company policies.
  • You will lead safety meetings, represent the company in H&S inspections by external authorities, and respond promptly to any audit findings or regulatory recommendations.
  • You will encourage employee participation in health & safety initiatives and work closely with all teams to embed a culture of safety and continuous improvement across all company operations.
  • You will support emergency preparedness, oversee fire drills and first aid arrangements, and ensure appropriate signage and safety equipment are always in place.
  • Be the go to Health and Safety representative for 2 of their large scale sites with one being in Athlone and the other in the Mayo region.

 

What Skills You Need

  • At least 2 years’ experience as a Health & Safety Officer within the construction industry.
  • Relevant Health & Safety qualification (e.g., Diploma in Occupational Health & Safety, NEBOSH, or equivalent).
  • Strong, up-to-date knowledge of Irish construction safety legislation, codes of practice, and H&S management systems.
  • Excellent organisational and communication skills, with the ability to engage, influence, and motivate site teams at all levels.
  • Proven experience in incident investigation, risk assessment, and report writing.
  • Ability to train, coach, and support others effectively, fostering a culture of safety.
  • Proficiency with Health & Safety documentation, policies, and auditing processes.
  • Full driving licence required.
