SOFTWARE DEVELOPMENT DIRECTOR

Role:

The Director of Engineering will build, manage and mentor our growing engineering team.

The candidate will ensure that technology and product standards are defined and delivered, meeting business and client expectations.

The Director of Engineering will interact with Project Management, QA, IT and Product Management teams to establish development objectives and timelines, managing resources to support product deliverables.

Responsibilities:

o Technical team leadership in a multidisciplinary environment

o Manage a distributed engineering team responsible for a diverse product range.

o Assists in developing solutions to software related problems

o Assists in developing standards and procedures to ensure high quality deliverables and consistent workflow across projects

o Supervisory responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

o Actively review projects, manage resources to on time delivery, track schedules and maintain budgets

o Manage day-to-day engineering team tasks and escalate issues to Vice President of Technology Strategy and Architecture as needed

o Works with the Vice President of Technology Strategy and Architecture to ensure that architecture and technology decisions support corporate strategies and future direction of all products in the product line

o Build effective working teams, coordinate with other departments

o Supports Project Management Office by ensuring development estimates are accurate, technical designs are sound, development resources with the correct skills are assigned to projects, holds his/her team accountable to follow the established design and development standards and that they deliver on time and with quality

o Partners with QA management to develop practices and standards that ensure quality solutions are delivered to the customer

o Effective communication and interpersonal skills (articulate and present business and technical information and respond to questions from groups of managers and customers).

o All employees may be required to perform duties outside of their normal responsibilities from time-to-time, as needed.

Experience:

Essential

o  M.Sc. in Computer Science or B.S. and equivalent experience

o 10 years in application and/or web development

o 3 years Object-Oriented Programming and Design experience

o 5 years managing large engineering teams

o Leadership ability with technical staff

o Proven history of releasing quality software and/or commercial web applications

o Experience managing budgets, capital, resources, etc.

o Interactive educational software experience a plus

Professional Skills

o Strong product development and engineering abilities

o Proven experience using industry standard software development methodologies

o Experience with multiple operating systems such as Windows, Linux, Solaris and Mac OS

o Experience managing development projects of all sizes and complexities, including large, enterprise systems

o Experience using standard software development tools

o Strong process definition and implementation experience

o Proven ability to grow a strong engineering team with necessary capabilities to accommodate a portfolio of diverse products

Supervisory Responsibilities

o Solid leadership skills
o Experienced with assigning development resources to projects; establish staffing objectives and delegate assignments to developers; prepare budgets and staffing plans/requirements

Highly Desirable

o A professional positive reinforcement coaching style preferred
